The following features apply to our transits. All are designed for easy operation and years of trouble-free service. They include:
The telescope's adjustments will maintain a straight line of sight throughout a focusing range of 2" to infinity, allowing the instrument to be located in the tightest of setups. This straightness is maintained at ±0.001" from 2" to 17 feet and one arcsecond from 17 feet to infinity.
The main telescope tube has a removable section at the eyepiece end to facilitate conversion to autocollimation and/or autoprojection capabilities, or the installation of a right angle eyepiece. The objective end of the telescope barrel is machined so you can mount an optical micrometer or auto-reflection target. Both ends of the telescope will plunge through the standards, even with the optical micrometer attached.
For extra rigidity and strength without extra weight, Brunson standards are made of an aluminum alloy in a one piece, truss-type design. The standards are designed so you can adjust the perpendicularity of the horizontal to vertical axis.
The instrument's vertical spindle is a patented, dustproof ball bearing design having a runout of 0.000025" or less, and is hollow to allow vertical shots. There are four dust-shielded leveling screws with 1½" knurled heads and a 3/8"-32 thread, in acetal plastic bushings. The base mounting plate is made of cast bronze with a standard 3½"-8 internal thread. Adjustment is provided in the base assembly for centering the optical axis of the telescope concentric to the vertical axis of the instrument.
A bull's eye bubble having 15 arc minute sensitivity is provided for rough leveling. Precision leveling is accomplished using the telescope's turret-type split-bubble level vial, our 194-TM, which has the capability to detect one arcsecond angular deviation.
All Brunson tangent screws are equipped with a wobble pin to eliminate strain when pointing the instrument. The clamp mechanisms are spring-loaded against the tangent screws. Clamping screws allow the standards and telescope either to spin freely or be controlled by the tangent screws.
The instrument is 13 ½" as measured from the bottom of the base to center of the horizontal axis.
The instruments are painted with a high quality gray metallic polyurethane coating.
